What are these documents?
Depending on the nature of your website, you may have a different set of required documents from other websites. For example, if your users are able to post content or comments onto your website you will want to have a Terms and Conditions policy outlining what your users may and may not do on your website, and the disciplinary actions you as the website owner are allowed to take.
These documents set out the rules of the website and disclose to the user information on how the website can interacts with them, including what data of theirs is collected when they interact with the website. Here is a list of common standard documents:
- Privacy Policy
- Terms and Conditions
- Cookie Policy
- Affiliate Disclosure/Disclaimer
- GDPR Privacy Policy
- Refund, Shipping, and Returns Policies
Some of these are often aggregated into one document, for example, the Cookie Policy and GDPR Privacy Policy can be contained and integrated with the Privacy Policy as long as this merge still clearly defines all the necessary aspects of the documents.
Why do I need these documents on my website?
The simple answer is they ensure (1) that you and your website/business operates within the law both domestically and internationally, (2) that you are protected legally from the actions users take on your website such as distancing yourself from their own behavior and preventing your content from being stolen, misused, or altered, and lastly (3) that your users are made aware of how their data is being used and what the results of their actions on the website will be.
Even if you have a simple website, without a facility where your users can post their own content, or without a sign up service, or without a payment service, you should still have these documents and cover aspects that aren't immediately obvious, such as the collection of analytical data.
These laws are intended for all online businesses and websites, so even as a start up or a small website/business, you should ensure that you are compliant with these laws and requirements.
Failure to comply with these laws can result in you receiving complaints and fines, and if you aren't protecting yourself legally from the actions of your users theres no knowing what damage can be done or legal action taken against you and your website.
People are also becoming more and more data conscious. They may refuse to use your website and services if you do not clearly define how you will use, store, and manipulate their data or if you misuse their data.
Furthermore, if you want to make use of services such as Google Ads, Google Analytics, Amazon Affiliates or any other service that interacts with you users through your website then you are required to be compliant to these laws and have these documents. You will often also be required to add a policy segment provided by the service to your documents.
Option 1: Self-written documents
You can write these documents yourself using various definitions of what is required from online sources such as government websites. There are also templates available from many providers. However, knowing where to look, which templates to use, and what aspects of the document you require in your own document can be challenging as the information provided on writing these documents is broad in order to cover a vast array of websites that can exist. It is very unlikely that one website's privacy policy will look the same as another website's privacy policy. Even creating documents for a simple website can be challenging.
Option 2: Online automated document generation
There are many online generators for privacy policies and terms and conditions, some of which are free. These can be used to create a base set of documents upon which you can build your own requirements but they face a similar issue to the self-written approach; they are difficult to edit and write in ways to cover your bespoke website requirements. On top of this, the document generators often produce very generic documents, especially the free ones. This is due to the documents requiring some intuitive and intelligent decision making to decide which aspects your document for your website will need. Therefore, often, the produced documents need heavy amounts of altering.
Paid online automated document generation
There are paid online services which produce better automatically generated documents but these can be very expensive, requiring you to pay even more to have the document be downloaded instead of the document being hosted on their system for a subscription fee. These options are often times not very appealing for startups or small websites with little cash to spend on documents.
Option 3: Use the services of professionals on Fiverr
One key aspect missing from the previous options was the lack of help from an expert. They required you to have really good knowledge about each document and write the policies yourself with a little automated help. So having an expert person write the documents for you and help you would be ideal as they already know what aspects your documents will need. But aren't these services expensive and difficult to get access to? Well not really thanks to the help of services like Fiverr! Let us explain.

Brief introduction into Fiverr
Fiverr is an online freelance services marketplace where you can affordably pay experts for their services (known as Gigs) in an almost endless range of categories from video editing, website design, ad production, and legal/financial advice to name a few. For more information check out Fiverr or for a more in-depth description of what Fiverr is and how to use it, check out our article on How to use Fiverr.
How can Fiverr help with writing these documents?
With Fiverr, there are literally hundreds of Gigs (services) available from sellers for writing these documents alone! Click here for a quick list of privacy policy creation gigs. Many services here can provide you with the set of documents you need for your website as a one off document that you can simply include in your website. Some Gigs provide you with the HTML code as well for easier integration into your website. All of this usually comes at a considerably low price compared to paying for online subscription services to host your documents for you.
Prices range depending on which types of service you would like and what package suits you best. But most Gigs and packages are priced between $10-$20 (£7-£14) and these Gigs will often cover most of what you want from your documents (however there are greater options available should you want them).
Here is a list we made of examples of Gigs providing services in writing privacy policies and similar documents:
- A wide variety of aspects covered in your documents including FAQs and disclaimers for between $9-$28 (£7-£20).
- A Basic Package containing a GDPR privacy policy and terms and conditions (plus cookie policy for a little extra) from an industry expert for between $9-$15 (£7-£12).
- A comprehensive Standard Package providing GDPR privacy policy, cookies policy, and terms and conditions for your website and app for between $5-$15 (£3-£12).
- If you're willing to pay a little extra for a highly comprehensive set of documents from a highly rated seller (over 1000 highly positive reviews) then take a look at this Gig ($30-$48 or £22-£35).
How to create your documents using Fiverr with demonstration
For this article, we ordered a GDPR Privacy Policy, Cookie Policy, and Terms and Conditions creating Gig from Fiverr for our own website and we will share with you our experience in using these services. Firstly, you need to pick the Gig that matches your budget and requirements (check out our article on How to use Fiverr for more details on picking the right Gig for you).
Here is the Gig that we ordered which amounted to a cost of approximately $14 or £11. We chose this Gig as it had many positive reviews including a five star overall rating as well as being quite affordable. We chose the Standard Package with some additional extras after ordering including the cookie policy and affiliate disclosure.
Once you order, you'll be prompted to answer a some questions about your website/app so that the person writing your document will know what aspects your documents should include. For example, we were asked if we had a returns policy or any specifics about our website.
After that we waited 2 days and received our set of documents. The documents contained a fully fledged set of policies and statements to cover our website and we were so pleased by this that we replaced our own privacy policy and terms and conditions on Maribotech with the new documents. And that's it! It is highly advised that you ensure that you read through the documents and make sure that you are happy with what's been written and to make sure that it covers everything to your knowledge. It is also recommended that you compare the document with the legal requirements provided from governments. This is just to be sure for your own knowledge that the document is compliant.
I will note however, that the documents from this Gig did not contain specific statements from the services we expressly use on our website such as Google Analytics, but these statements are only a few sentences that we needed to add in ourselves and these statements are provided by the service providers themselves.
